Idomeneo (2006) Idomeneo
was composed by Mozart in 1781, when he was 25. It was a commission
from the Bavarian court and was first performed in Munich on 29 January
of that year. It is considered by many to be his first great opera. Like
many operas, Idomeneo is based on a Greek myth and like many great
operas it takes a fantastic, mythical story and presents a moral
dilemma that we can understand and be absorbed into. What if
you had a moral duty to kill your son? What if your refusal to do so
would destroy your country? Imagine (and the magic of opera allows
great imagination) that you are in this situation. How would you deal
with it? We all know that Mozart composed wonderful music. In this opera there is an involving drama to go with the music.
