Welcome
Pinchgut's 2008 opera will be Charpentier's David and Jonathan.Another unjustly ignored work from the French baroque.
 | | A recently discovered portrait, probably of Charpentier |
In 2005 we produced the first Australian production of Rameau's Dardanus. Many people contacted us to ask for more French works. Marc-Antoine Charpentier's David and Jonathan (David et Jonathas) was first produced in Paris in 1688 then forgotten for 300 years. It has never been produced in Australia before. Based on the biblical story of David, Jonathan and Saul the work contains wonderful arias, choruses and orchestral music that will delight lovers of baroque and excite those coming to this kind of music for the first time. Soloists include Swedish tenor Anders Dahlin, soprano Sara Macliver, basses Dean Robinson, Richard Anderson and David Parkin, baritone Simon Lobelson and tenor Paul McMahon. Antony Walker will conduct Orchestra of the Antipodes (playing authentic instruments of the period) and the chorus will be Cantillation. It will be a fully staged and costumed production with American director Chas Rader-Shieber directing.
Opening night is Wednesday 3 December and there will be performances on Saturday 6, Sunday 7 (early evening) and Monday 8 December. All at City Recital Hall Angel Place Sydney where bookings will open in July.
