Freddy Shaw is an emerging opera singer with a strong foundation in both ensemble and solo performing. A passionate music enthusiast from an early age, Freddy’s musical journey began at the age of six when he embarked on learning the piano. His vocal journey began shortly after, culminating in his acceptance into the prestigious Sydney Children’s Choir in 2016. In 2017, Freddy’s talents were further recognized when he was admitted to the Conservatorium High School, studying piano, voice, and saxophone. He is currently in his third year of a Bachelor of Music with the support of the Chapple / Bremner scholarship, studying under Barry Ryan OAM Freddy’s career as a musician began as a boy soprano, performing with Opera Australia in their 2017 production of King Roger as a member of the children’s chorus. The following year, he played the role of Joas in Pinchgut Opera’s production of Athalia, marking his debut as a soloist. As a bass-baritone, Freddy’s performances have expanded to include a range of opera and concert repertoire. He has been featured as a soloist in Haydn’s The Creation, Deborah Cheetham Fraillon’s Parrwang Lifts the Sky, and in various early music works, including Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with Christchurch St Lawrence. Freddy is a Lay Clerk with the St Mary’s Cathedral Choir, performing regularly at services and special events. In 2024, Freddy made his debut as a member of the Cantillation Chorus in Pinchgut Opera’s production of Dido and Aeneas, and is currently a Taryn Fiebig Scholar for the duration of 2025 and 2026. With a passion for both solo performance and ensemble work, Freddy continues to grow as a versatile and accomplished artist, blending an understanding of musical tradition with an eagerness to explore new vocal challenges.
