A principal artist with Opera Australia, mezzo-soprano Helen Sherman has appeared with the company in roles such as Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Gertrude (Hansel and Gretel), Larina (Eugene Onegin), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Mistress of Novices (Suor Angelica), and Mercédès (Carmen). Her international career has taken her to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, to sing Flora (La traviata); to Opera North as Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) and Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro); and to Teatru Manoel, Malta, as Dorabella (Così fan tutte). She sang the title role in Giulio Cesare with Bury Court Opera, as well as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) and Sesto (La clemenza di Tito) with Classical Opera and The Mozartists.
Helen has performed several significant Baroque roles with Pinchgut Opera, including Sesto (Giulio Cesare), Irene (Theodora), Tamiri (Farnace) and the title role in L'incoronazione di Poppea, for which she received a Helpmann Award nomination. She has also sung the title role in Carmen for State Opera South Australia.
A distinguished concert artist, Helen has taken the alto solos in Handel’s Messiah with the Melbourne Symphony and at the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, QPAC Concert Hall, and The Sage Gateshead. Her concert repertoire also includes Duruflé’s Requiem with Sydney Philharmonia and The Dream of Gerontius with Christchurch Symphony, alongside appearances with the Australian Haydn Ensemble, Sydney and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and London Mozart Players.
Helen represented Australia at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World and Francisco Viñas International Singing Competitions, and was a prize winner at the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition.
