Peter Rubie

Lighting Designer

Peter Rubie is a Sydney-based Lighting Designer whose work is seen worldwide across concerts, theatre, dance, broadcast, corporate events, and immersive installations. He believes that lighting can make or break a performance, and strives to elevate both artist and audience experience through thoughtful, emotionally driven design.

A graduate of WAAPA (2007) with training in theatre design, Peter’s work is known for its nuanced, theatrical sensibility — regardless of scale or genre. His designs have been widely recognised in critical reviews as dynamic and expressive, drawing from musical and narrative structures to shape the visual language, mood, and thematic world of each production.

Music is central to Peter’s creative process, and he regularly works with state orchestras and ensembles across Australia, creating fusions of classical and contemporary performance. Frequent collaborators include the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, and Pinchgut Opera.

Peter is no stranger to large-scale concerts, having designed for artists such as Lea Salonga, Tina Arena, Ben Folds, Jennifer Holliday, Caroline O’Connor, Reuben Kaye, and Mo’Ju. Major touring concert productions include Disney 100 (MM Creative), Do You Hear the People Sing? (Alain Boublil & Claude-Michel Schönberg; Enda Markey Presents), Piano Man and Hopelessly Devoted (Make My Mark), Disco Wonderland (Release Creative), and Pandemonium for Meow Meow.

Theatre credits include ONCE (Darlinghurst Theatre Company), GODSPELL and BARBRA: The Greatest Star (Hayes Theatre Co), Thrones! A Musical Parody (Sydney Opera House), Little Women (Joshua Robson Productions), and Becoming Eliza (Enda Markey Presents). In dance, Peter has collaborated with companies such as Brent St, Form Dance Projects, and Limitless Dance Company, working closely with choreographers such as Amy Campbell, Michaeljon Slinger, Cassie Bartho, Cameron Mitchell, and Yvette Lee.

In addition to live performance, Peter has extensive experience in broadcast and screen, serving as Lighting Director for music videos and live-streamed concerts, including international broadcasts for Tina Arena and Lea Salonga, as well as projects such as The Reservoir Room.

Peter has delivered bespoke corporate and brand experiences for clients including Foxtel, Bvlgari, Cartier, Netflix, and Channel 9, and has collaborated closely with production houses such as Alfred and Rizer.

His immersive and installation work includes Kabarett Haus (Perth International Arts Festival), Sunset Piazza (City of Sydney), Sydney South Eveleigh Solstice (NSW Government), Sydney International Cabaret Festival, and Progressum — an immersive spatial sound and light experience for Vivid Sydney.
