Tobias cole

Countertenor

This year Tobias Cole was the winner of the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists Award and in January will be leaving for three months of study in New York. He will also shortly be making an ABC recording of music by Purcell, Handel, Bach and Britten for radio broadcast in the new year.

Tobias was eight when he joined Walter Sutcliffe’s choir at St James’ Church, King Street, becoming head chorister a few years later. As a boy soprano he also sang with The Australian Opera and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and toured Europe with the Newington College Chapel Choir, of which he was also head chorister. While at Sydney University he joined The Renaissance Players under Winsome Evans and then continued his studies at London’s Royal College of Music on a Churchill Fellowship.

Tobias has appeared with Opera Australia, West Australian Opera, Opera Queensland, London Handel Festival, English National Opera, English Bach Festival, Abbey Opera and Kent Opera. He has also sung many of the great baroque oratorios in both Australia and Europe and will be singing in Sydney Philharmonia’s performances of Messiah in the Sydney Opera House later in December this year.

Tobias’ interests in theatre and circus recently lead him to audition successfully for the title role in a Canberra production of Cy Coleman’s musical Barnum. Subsequently, he has been invited to perform the opening number at the Canberra Amateur Theatre Awards ceremony in mid December at The Playhouse.

Tobias lives in Sydney with his wife Katie and two young children.
