This month, we're delighted to introduce soprano Izabelle Zammit

Read on to get to know our Taryn Fiebig Scholar, Izabelle.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to be a performer.

Music has always been a part of my life, so becoming a performer felt like an exciting and almost natural thing for me. I have sung for basically my whole life, spanning across all genres, and I have been performing since I was six years old! Going to Newtown High School of the Performing Arts also gave me a stage from a young age, and being a part of the musical culture only made me love it more. Now being in my final year of my undergraduate degree at the Sydney Conservatorium, performing is a great love of mine and I get so excited when I get called on stage!

What have you recently been up to?

As I’m journeying into my professional career, I have been getting busier and I’m loving it! Some exciting performances I’ve done recently, have been a masterclass with the amazing soprano Jessica Pratt. She was able to help me so much vocally and her guidance has already worked its way into my repertoire. I have also recently co-founded an opera company called Auralis Music where we just put on Le Nozze Di Figaro by Mozart. Singing Susanna while managing hall hire, orchestral musicians and social media marketing was a lot…but so much fun! The Pinchgut team has also been giving us some really helpful workshops on how to improve our professionalism and personal brand, along with coaching with Erin, and that has been so beneficial to me.

Who inspired you to pursue music?

Absolutely my parents. They are both incredible piano teachers and I was surrounded by music at all times. I grew up playing music memorising games with my teddy bears and falling asleep to the sound of my mum teaching Bach. It brought me so much joy and was such an integral part of my day to day, that I just couldn’t imagine life without it.

What are you most excited about the with the upcoming production of Semele?

One of the things I’m most excited for in the upcoming Semele, is basically all of act 2. Within the act, one of my favourite arias ever is being sung by mezzo soprano, Catherine Carby, the aria, “Hence, Iris, Hence Away”. It’s such an exciting and expressive piece; I can’t wait to hear it! Also in act 2, I get to sing Cupid's aria, “Come, Zephyrs, Come”. I can’t wait to sing the enchanting song of Cupid to you all and perform it on stage! Honestly, I am just so thrilled to be part of this production with such an amazing cast and creatives.

What’s your pre-show ritual?

I don’t really have a ritual, per say, just some nice healthy warm ups. I try to give myself around half an hour to vocalise (check if my high notes are still there…) and settle into the performance ‘vibe’. Making sure I’m nice and warm vocally, will mean I don’t have to push or create any artificial sounds. Another thing is that I must always

eat relatively close to my performance time. I know some of my colleagues can’t eat at all before a performance, but I’m the opposite. I hate feeling hungry and feeling low energy before any performance.

What are you watching/listening to at the moment?

At the moment, my repertoire playlist is on rewind! I find listening to different interpretations of the songs I’m learning really help me memorise and create my own versions of the repertoire. I recommend the album recording of Kathleen Battle singing Semele to get into the Semele mood for the end of the year:) And in terms of watching…The Office US (it’s a classic).

What’s your current obsession?

Watching videos of sea lions…they are just so cute and funny.
