Valda Wilson initially trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before winning Opera Foundation Australia’s scholarship to the National Opera Studio London.
From 2010-2012 she was a member of the Junges Ensemble at the Dresden Semperoper where she has since returned regularly as a guest artist. Her roles there included the title role in Hartmann’s Simplicius Simplicissimus, female lead in the world premiere of Srnka’s Jakub Flügelbunt, Pamina and Papagena Die Zauberflöte, Jennie Hildebrand in Weill’s Streetscene, and Inez Il trovatore.
During the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons Valda Wilson made her debuts as First Wood Sprite Rusalka at Naple’s Teatro di San Carlo, the title role in Handel’s Rodelinda under Richard Bonynge in Sydney, Pamina Die Zauberflöte für Kinder at the Salzburg Festival, Rosina Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Verbier Festival Academy, Donna Anna Don Giovanni in Bamberg, and Mischa in Charody’s circus opera The Carnival in Hamburg. Most recently Valda sang Pamina for Oper Klosterneuburg’s new production of Die Zauberflöte in Vienna.
Valda joined the Ensemble of the Oldenburg State Theatre in 2014, which continues into the 2016 season. She debuted five new roles in her first season: Alice Ford in Falstaff, Iole in Hercules, Julia in Der Vetter aus Dingsda, Anna in La Dame Blanche, and Contessa d’Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro.
A sought-after concert artist, Valda’s recent engagements include performances with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and Orchestre des Champs Elysées both under Philippe Herreweghe, Beethoven’s Fantasy Op.80 under Charles Dutoit at the Verbier Festival, Carmina Burana at Salzburg’s Grosses Festspielhaus, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mozart concert arias with the Halle Orchestra under Markus Stenz, and Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 with the London Cello Orchestra touring South Korea.
Valda has recently enjoyed performing a variety of song cycles with various chamber ensembles. Concert plans for 2015 include performances and a CD recording as part of the Dresden Philharmonie Chamber Music series.
Valda Wilson features in the title role of Rodelinda on the ABC Classics CD recording with Richard Bonynge, and in the four part TV documentary of the prestigious Stella Maris International Singing Competition which she won.
Valda was chosen by Richard Bonynge to be the only featured soloist at the Westminster Abbey memorial service for Dame Joan Sutherland with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, under Sir Antonio Pappano.
Valda will sing the role of Theodora in Theodora for Pinchgut Opera in December 2016.
